The Door to Hell

I added Turkmenistan to this route only after the paperwork stopped being theoretical: a letter of invitation, a licensed guide booked weeks out, a transit timing that had to match the visa window, and a driver who treated the desert road like a schedule, not a suggestion. Hunches are expensive here; this one still felt worth it. The Darvaza crater has been burning for decades. The story everyone repeats is a Soviet drilling accident with a tidy date attached; the records, true to form, decline to confirm either - and I have learned not to trust a story just because it is tidy. Nobody in charge ever stepped in to put it out, and it has just kept going, unexplained to most of the people who pass it, glowing at the center of an empty desert at night.

Standing at the rim, the heat comes off it like a held note. I remember thinking, not very originally, that it looked like the physical version of what a numbers station sounds like: something started for reasons nobody now confirms, running on its own schedule, indifferent to whether anyone is listening or watching.

I did not need the crater for the book. I needed to have stood at the edge of one operational mystery to write convincingly about another. My jacket smelled like sulfur for a week afterward. Some research costs are just laundry.
