Incense by QR Code

In the monastery the incense basin has a QR code. You scan, you pay one yuan, the phone chimes its small secular chime, and then you take your red stick and light it from the coals and plant it among the hundreds, and the smoke goes up through the brocade and the gilding exactly as it has for centuries that never heard of telephony.

I did the full sequence, but the photograph keeps only the older half of the transaction: a dark figure against the gold of the shrines, planting the stick among the hundreds, the phone already back in the bag where it belongs. The chime happened off camera. Nobody around me found any of it remarkable, and that is the finding: the seam between the oldest transaction, hope for smoke, and the newest, code for coin, has healed over completely here.

I write about machines that carried belief, radios, reactors, computers built on threes. Here was the smallest possible case study, one yuan large, humming in my palm. The smoke, for the record, rises identically either way. I checked. That was the whole experiment.
