Behind the glass

The case stands at chest height with the light coming from above, and the machine inside has the patient look of an object that has been arranged rather than used, like furniture in a showroom. I went to see it on the afternoon I had free between the facades and the reading, following a report from 2016 that a museum in this city had an Iskra-226 on display. The report was right, as far as a report from that long ago can be right about a room. There it is. It is not going anywhere, and it turns out neither am I.

There is no drive block. That is the whole finding: a body, a keyboard, a front panel, and nothing on any of it that takes a disk. I asked the way you ask when you already know the answer, whether the thing had ever been switched on. Nobody in the house could say. Not evasively and not defensively, simply nobody knew, because nobody has needed to know, and whoever would have known does not work here now. The glass does what glass does. It keeps the object and it stops the question.

I left my disk at the hotel, which tells you exactly what I expected. Kyiv was a room that never emptied. Almaty was four hours of road and a screen that has not held a picture in years. This was a short walk in, my own coat reflected back at me off the case, and out onto the street again in time for coffee before the reading. It was the coldest of the three, and the reason is plain: in the other two there was at least somebody standing there to ask.

So I went back to the boot side tonight, to the four slots that disagree with one another, because somebody has to decide which of them is right and there is no longer anyone to hand that to. The commit is called majority vote across the four slots. I slept well afterward, which is worth writing down. The machines are gone. The bytes are what is left.
