The Writing Machine

The Writing Machine

My old laptop had begun to wheeze like a marshrutka on a hill, fans climbing toward some private emergency every time I opened a long file. I found a used 13-inch MacBook Pro on the classifieds and messaged the seller before I could talk myself out of the spend. We met in a parking lot behind a supermarket two towns down the peninsula, cash folded twice, both of us slightly formal in the way of strangers exchanging a machine that still felt expensive.

The previous owner had kept everything. Original box, the white charger coiled like a sleeping animal, the manuals still in their sleeve, even the unused Apple stickers clinging to their glossy sheet. At home I unboxed it properly, which was absurd for a secondhand object and which I did anyway, lifting each layer as if the ceremony might transfer some of his care into my rooms. The aluminium was cool. There was a faint scuff near the hinge that proved it had already lived.

The keyboard sounded different from the old one: tighter, less hollow, a clean tick under each fingertip. I opened the novel draft first, because superstition has its own filing system. The cursor blinked in exactly the same impatient way it always had. Whatever else changes, that thin vertical insistence remains. I made coffee in the battered cezve and let the machine sit open on the table, learning the temperature of the apartment.
