No Bars at Song-Kul

Me shielding my eyes by the alpine lake with horses.

We drove up until the signal died completely, which was the point. Dinara had booked a yurt near Song-Kul for a weekend that asked nothing of us except layers and a tolerance for altitude. The lake sat under a sky so wide it felt slightly rude, as if it had never heard of deadlines. Horses cropped the grass with professional indifference. I left the shortwave at home on purpose.

Days compressed into simple sequences: tea, a walk that stole my breath, more tea, the slow gold of evening on the ridges. We talked about everything except manuscripts. Someone else’s dog adopted us for an afternoon. At night the cold arrived honest and early, and the stove became the center of the universe. I slept without dreaming of outlines.

I am writing this after the fact, back among chargers and inboxes, which is the only way such a trip can be recorded without spoiling it. The escape was deliberate. For forty-eight hours I was not a person who researches closed cities or ternary logic.

I was a person watching weather move across water, grateful for a friend who understands when to stop asking how the book is going. The phone found the network again on the descent. I let it sit face down a little longer than necessary.
