Nobody has written one

Me at the kitchen table under one lamp, tea going cold, a list in the notebook with everything crossed out but one line.

I spent most of last week looking for someone else's work. That is the honest shape of research: you hope the thing is already solved, you go looking for the person who solved it, you plan to thank them in an acknowledgment and get on with your own book. For the Iskra-226 there is nobody to thank. There is no emulator. Not for this machine, not for any Iskra, not anywhere I can reach.

MAME lists it as a skeleton, undumped, which is the polite way a project says we know the machine existed and we have nothing off it. WangEmu covers the Wang 2200, which the Iskra meets at the level of its BASIC and nowhere else, having never been a hardware clone of anything. It does not claim the Iskra, and it is right not to. Both answers are correct and neither one is a way in. I read them again anyway, the way you check a coat pocket you have already checked.

Something turned over while I sat with that. I noticed I had stopped reading like a novelist about an hour earlier. I was not after atmosphere, or a period detail to hand a character. I was after a track count, a sector size, a place to start, and when the search came back empty I was not disappointed. I went quiet and practical instead, which is worse. An absence in a bibliography is a footnote you write around. An absence in software is an assignment.

So yesterday evening at 21:12 I made the first commit into a repository that had not existed that morning. One short file, one job, and the message says all of it. read a sector. One sector, out of the stream I carried home from Kyiv in April, which up to yesterday was a file that no program on earth could open, mine included.

In my books I wake the ghosts of the Soviet past. In my code I wake, and there the sentence stops. I have written it out four times this week and I cannot finish it, which in my experience means I do not yet know what I am doing, only that I have started doing it. Nobody has written one. I keep saying it to myself like a complaint, and it keeps coming back sounding like a job posting with exactly one applicant.
