←→Evening in a guesthouse near the park boundary, flowered oilcloth, beds under red blankets, and my navigation department deployed across the table: paper maps with pencil, and the rugged ex-survey laptop I bought at the barakholka for the price of a decent dinner. It boots like a tractor starting in January and then runs forever, which is the entire specification I care about.
The screen says Ready to Navigate with the confidence of a machine that has never been wrong about anything except everything after 2009, when its maps stop. I use it the way you consult a wise elder with outdated politics: for the bones of the land, not the news. The pencil does the current century.
A word on the machine, because people ask when they see it. It is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-19, built for soldiers and surveyors, and it is the most practical piece of travel equipment I own after the Niva itself. Magnesium case, sealed keyboard, a handle like a lunchbox. It rides loose in the footwell over washboard gravel and considers that storage. It boots in an unheated guesthouse at four degrees, where my phone shows a battery warning and existential doubt. The screen is the transflective kind that gets MORE readable in direct sun, which matters when you navigate with the map on the passenger seat and the steppe glaring through every window.
And it has real ports. An old serial GPS puck plugs straight in, no adapters, no pairing, no cloud account asking how I feel about a subscription. The whole rig cost less at the barakholka than one year of a mapping app, and when I drop it, and I do, the floor is the party that worries. Slow, heavy, indestructible, repairable with a screwdriver: the exact virtues I look for in vehicles, laptops and research plans.
Tomorrow the striped mountains, then sand. I traced the route twice, once for the plan and once for the pleasure, which are different disciplines. The lamp was warm, the tea went cold on schedule, and outside the steppe practiced its silence.
