A numbers station (G02) opens with a tinkling music-box tune and a synthesised voice pitched to sound like a young girl reading German number groups. Declassified Polish files later reveal it was operated by Poland's security service using East German voice hardware; the eerie 'child' was a machine.
British monitor Simon Mason publishes 'Secret Signals: The Euronumbers Mystery', an early catalogue of European numbers stations by their tunes and voices, the Lincolnshire Poacher, Swedish Rhapsody, Papa November, and to insist, patiently, that they were real.
The eerie music-box station ceases in April 1998, its later English-language successor catalogued separately. The declassification of Polish files years afterward finally names the machine, and the state, behind the 'girl's' voice.
