1983-09-26 Judges the alarm false

Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, on duty at a Soviet early-warning centre, decides that a satellite report of incoming American missiles is a malfunction and does not pass it up the chain. He is right. The episode shows how thin the human margin was in the systems the Buzzer's myth invokes.

2013 Belatedly honoured

Long after the fact, Petrov is recognised internationally as 'the man who saved the world'. He dies in 2017, having spent decades insisting he was simply doing his job.

2014 'The Man Who Saved the World'

A documentary-drama brings Petrov's 1983 decision to a wide audience. He remains uneasy with the hero's role, insisting the systems he served left far too much to chance, and to a single tired officer on a night shift.
