Ivanov's Ghost, The Story in 60 Seconds
Moldova · October 1998
A storm. An abandoned Soviet airstrip. A NATO plane going down.
Its injured pilot is carried into a hospital that no one talks about.
The crash
Kyiv to Chișinău, a surveillance loop, back by dinner.
The Twin Otter drops thirty metres in two seconds. The right gear finds a bomb crater from a war that ended before the pilot was born.
A dying country · 1998
A country that cannot decide if it is European or Soviet.
Independence in 1991. War in 1992. Now the Russian default, unpaid wages, blackouts, and hospitals with no heat and no medicine.
Ward 3
He wakes in a bed that smells of bleach and decay.
A cold radiator. A flickering tube. Four nurses assigned to his care. And, through the rain, a research annex nobody has entered in decades.
Askania-Nova · 1910
Long before the hospital, a man who bred impossible animals.
Ilya Ivanov, master of artificial insemination, crossed zebra with horse and bison with cattle on the open steppe.
Conakry · 1927
Then he tried to cross a human with an ape.
Funded by the Soviet state, he inseminated three chimpanzees with human sperm. All failed. The reverse plan was refused. The Academy disowned him.
The real project
Not the version for the newspapers. Not the apes.
Ivanov believed the body's responses could pass from one person to another, through proximity, through something he had no word for.
Sukhumi · 1929
An orangutan named Tarzan dies before the experiment can begin.
A Leningrad woman had written offering herself as a volunteer. Then the purges closed the window. Ivanov was arrested, exiled, and died in 1932.
The annex
'This happened before,' the old surgeon says. 'In '74.'
A patient. Nurses whose bodies responded without their consent. Proximity. Involuntary. Physiological. And somewhere below, Ivanov's notebooks wait in the dark.
The frozen war
Just across the Dniester, a war that never ended.
Borders fixed not by treaty but by shellfire. A NATO plane overhead is an incident. A stranger can vanish into a ward that keeps no records.
“The building is restless. The sound continues. That hum in the walls.”
