Alexander Lebed is born in Novocherkassk and rises through the Soviet airborne forces.
War erupts along the Dniester. The battle for Bender in June is its best-known episode; the ceasefire later gives the city a special regime and the seat of the joint control commission. Russia's 14th Army under Lebed intervenes.
Lebed arrives in Tiraspol on 23 June 1992 under the cover name Colonel Gusev and is appointed commander of the Russian 14th Guards Army on 27 June. His artillery shells Moldovan positions on 3 and 4 July; a ceasefire is signed in Moscow on 21 July.
Lebed finishes third in the Russian presidential election with about 14.7 per cent, is made secretary of the Security Council after the first round, and in that post brokers the Khasavyurt ceasefire that ends the first Chechen war.
Lebed dies in a helicopter crash while governor of Krasnoyarsk.
