Friedrich Falz-Fein is born at Askania-Nova on the Taurida steppe, into a German-descended landowning family.
1898 Founds Askania-Nova
Falz-Fein sets aside further parcels of virgin steppe, extending the protection he began in 1889. The estate becomes the core of Ukraine's oldest nature reserve, declared a state reserve in 1921.
1920-08-02 Dies in exile
Dispossessed by the revolution, Falz-Fein dies abroad, but his reserve, and Ivanov's hybrid work there, outlives him.
