Twenty-five

Birthday selfie on the brass bed: grey hoodie, bun, one muffin held up like a trophy.

I turned twenty-five on a Tuesday and kept the day mostly empty on purpose. No dinner reservation, no group chat countdown. Aigerim sent a voice note in the morning. Dinara left a jar of something sweet outside my door with a note that said only the number and a drawn sun. I made coffee in the battered cezve, opened the window onto a cool street, and let the hours arrange themselves without a program.

At some point in the afternoon I sat on the floor with my back against the sofa and did the unlovely arithmetic people do when a year clicks over. Do I want to stay in Bishkek for good. Do I want to own a place instead of renting one with a temperamental lift and a kitchen that is almost enough. Do I want a partner in the solid, daily sense. Do I want children, ever, or only in the abstract way you want a life that looks complete from the outside.

I do not have answers that would satisfy a form. I like this city in the specific: the banya on Saturdays, the shortwave hiss in the evening, the way the air smells just before the first snow. I also know liking is not the same as choosing forever. Ownership feels heavy and also like a kind of quiet I have not earned yet. Partnership sits somewhere between curiosity and fatigue. Children are a door I can see at the end of a corridor I have not walked down; I will not pretend the corridor is shorter than it is.

The evening ended with tea from the samovar corner and a page of notes that were not for any book. I slept without resolving the ledger. Twenty-five does not owe me clarity. It only marked the day and left the questions on the table where I can trip over them again, which I expect I will.
