Kazimir Malevich's Black Square of 1915: a black square on a white ground, the paint cracked with age.
Kazimir Malevich, Black Square, 1915, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. Reproduction via Wikimedia Commons, public domain.

I have started this six times.

In December I stood at the barrels on the Maidan and a woman wrapped in a flag made room for me on a bench. I have written to two people in Kyiv this morning and I do not expect an answer today. I am not going to arrange this into a paragraph that works.

There is no photograph of me with this one, only a square somebody painted in 1915 and meant.
