The Field Kitchen

Me in a blue disposable gown ladling food with volunteers at long tables.

The field kitchen is a tradition here now: on the anniversary, volunteers cook and serve the way the city cooked and served through that winter, when feeding the square was its own front. I asked if visitors could help. A blue gown was on me before I finished the sentence.

I ladled for an hour under chandeliers that have seen better centuries, between women who have done this since 2013 and could ladle blindfolded. The borshch line moves with military order and grandmotherly warmth simultaneously, which may be the national style.

My contribution was statistically negligible and personally enormous. You understand a thing differently once you have held its ladle. That sentence is now my method statement.
