Coffee on the Only Copy

Me on the rainy Bishkek balcony at dusk, holding a coffee-stained page.

I had the cezve on the little gas ring because the electric kettle had died again, and I was reaching across the desk for a pen when the foam rose like a bad decision. Coffee hit the open notebook in a dark, fragrant flood. Three weeks of handwritten research notes, dates and half-translated names and the sort of marginal arrows that only make sense at two in the morning, all of it suddenly swimming.

Panic is a physical thing. I scooped the sodden pages up and carried them like injured birds to the bathroom sink, then out to the laundry line on the balcony. Pegged them one by one in the cold spring air of Bishkek, watching brown rings spread while the ink lightened into something half-legible and strangely beautiful. Neighbors walking their dogs glanced up. I pretended this was a deliberate artistic choice.

The sheepish part arrived later, once the pages had stiffened into wrinkled parchment. I had been meaning to photograph every sheet for weeks. The phone sat three feet away the entire time. Most of the notes survived if you held them to the light and squinted. One page dried into pure abstraction, a Rorschach of coffee and abandoned Cyrillic. I keep it in the desk drawer now as a reminder that the universe has a sense of timing, and that mine is reliably worse.
