Chorsu and the cosmonaut metro

Me lifting a spice cone under the Chorsu Bazaar dome.

I went to Tashkent with no archive list and no righteous pencil case. That felt almost illicit. After months of steering every journey toward some future footnote, I wanted three days of being merely a person in a winter coat who likes tile work and soup. The flight was short enough to feel like a shrug. The city met me with pale sun and that dry cold which sharpens every outline.

Chorsu bazaar did what bazaars do when you arrive hungry: it abolished my plans. I drifted under the blue dome among pyramids of spice, pomegranate juice staining paper cups, the slap of knives on boards, women arguing affectionately about weight. I bought dried fruit I did not need and a scarf I absolutely did. No notebook. I said this to myself like a spell. No notebook.

The cosmonaut-themed metro station was pure delight, a brief descent into optimistic tile and stellar kitsch that made me grin like a child released from errands. I rode the line longer than necessary, got off only to get back on, and let the year shake out of my shoulders in the tunnel wind. Later, plov arrived at the table in a mound that demanded commitment. I committed. Winter sun striped the tablecloth. Somewhere beyond the window, the city conducted its ordinary genius.

I came home rested in the specific way that only happens when you have refused to make a trip useful. The manuscript can wait on the desk in Bishkek without believing I abandoned it. Sometimes the work needs you to look at mosaics and eat slowly and remember that the world is not only source material. Sometimes a cosmonaut on a wall is allowed to be only a cosmonaut on a wall.
