←→September has arrived with a kind of administrative silence I do not especially enjoy. The inbox has been polite and sparse. Orders have slowed to the sort of trickle that makes a person check the wrong dashboards twice, as if the second look might politely disagree with the first. I have no dramatic numbers to confess, and I will not invent any. It is simply a modest, worrying quiet. What I have to my name in print are two technical translations that nobody buys in a summer, and a novel that is still six weeks from existing. Neither of those is a thing you can check a dashboard about, which does not stop me. I make the morning coffee, open the window, and watch the light on the building opposite while I resist the urge to do something loud about it.
The pages are not arriving either. I sit with the notebook and produce weather reports about my own hesitation. That combination (thin royalties, thinner draft) is a familiar trap, and I have fallen into it before: the sudden conviction that I should post something frantic, or move the publication date because waiting has started to feel like failing, or narrate the anxiety until it becomes a kind of content. I am trying not to. Panic performed for an audience has a way of becoming the work, and I already have work I would rather return to when it is ready.
So this is the report, such as it is. I am still keeping banya Saturdays when Dinara is free, still walking the long way back from Osh bazaar with a bag that cuts into the shoulder, still wearing black cardigans as if they were a uniform against uncertainty. Tea from the samovar corner in the evenings. The shortwave occasionally on, low. I will not pretend this stretch feels spacious or wise. It feels like waiting in a room where the clock is slightly too loud. But I can wait without turning the waiting into a sale. The books will either find their next readers or they will not do so because I discounted them in a mood. Tomorrow I will open the notebook again. That is the whole plan.
One short email when a new book is out or a price changes. Nothing else, and no forwarding to anyone.
