Barr and Sarant (as Berg and Staros) personally persuade Khrushchev to make Zelenograd the Soviet microelectronics city; Sarant becomes its deputy scientific director. Their Uzel control system for small submarines still serves on Kilo-class boats today.
With his patron toppled, Sarant loses his position as scientific director in Zelenograd. Back at the Leningrad bureau, he and Barr create the Uzel fire-control system, the first digital computer aboard a Soviet submarine, still in use in Kilo-class boats.
