1962 Spies convince Khrushchev to build chip city

Barr and Sarant (as Berg and Staros) personally persuade Khrushchev to make Zelenograd the Soviet microelectronics city; Sarant becomes its scientific director. Their Uzel fire-control system, the first digital computer on a Soviet submarine, still serves on Kilo-class boats today.

1964 Loses Zelenograd post after Khrushchev's fall

With his patron toppled, Sarant loses his position as scientific director in Zelenograd. Back at the Leningrad bureau, he and Barr create the Uzel fire-control system, the first digital computer aboard a Soviet submarine, still in use in Kilo-class boats.
