1955 Creates the Address programming language

With Volodymyr Korolyuk she creates the Address programming language, whose 'stroke operation' realizes indirect addressing of higher rank, analogous to pointers, nine years before Harold Lawson, who is usually credited with their invention. Created before Fortran's first manual (1956), it remains unknown outside the Soviet Union.

1955 Yushchenko creates the Address programming language

Kateryna Yushchenko creates the Address programming language with indirect addressing (pointers), before Fortran, COBOL and ALGOL. It is used on most Soviet computers.

1957 FORTRAN released by IBM

The first widely used high-level programming language. In the East, ALGOL dialects will dominate academia instead.

1959 Programs in Yushchenko's Address language

Fresh from a Stavropol mathematics degree she joins the Ukrainian Academy's computing centre, writing equation solvers, a simplex-method code and cutting-stock programs in the Address language under Yushchenko through 1965.

1961 First textbook 'Elements of Programming'

Her textbook with Gnedenko and Korolyuk is translated into several languages; her books later appear in France, East Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Denmark. From the early 1960s she helps build the first programming courses at Kiev University.

1964-01-10 Alpha compiler enters service

The Alpha system for an extended Algol-60 goes into production use at the Siberian Computing Centre, compiling over 300 programs in its first year with near-hand-written code quality, a first for Algol-class languages.

1965 Address language sidelined by decree

A scientific council decree partially 'bans' the Address programming language in favor of switching to Fortran, COBOL and ALGOL-60. Combined with her top-secret clearance (no travel to the West) and the language barrier, this seals her invisibility outside the USSR.

1965 MIR-1: engineer's machine, PC forerunner

Glushkov's Kiev institute builds the MIR-1, whose machine language is close to a high-level language (ANALITIK could transform algebraic expressions). The MIR machines count as early precursors of the personal computer.

1969 Unix begins at Bell Labs

Unix (from 1969) and the C language (1972) create the software foundation of modern computing.

1975 APROP: assembling programs from modules

She leads the APROP system (1975-92) for building large ES EVM programs from modules in different languages, defining module interfaces and a 64-function conversion library; it is adopted by 52 organizations across the USSR.

1975-07 BESM-6 processes Apollo-Soyuz telemetry

During Apollo-Soyuz a BESM-6 complex processes the Soviet telemetry.

1980 Elbrus-1 completed

The ten-processor Elbrus-1 (15 million ops/s) pioneered superscalar execution and tagged memory; its base language El-76 was written by a team including the future Pentium architect Vladimir Pentkovski.

1986 Silver medal for the DSSP language

Brusentsov receives the VDNKh silver medal for the Dialogue System of Structured Programming, developed in the early 1980s, which carries the ternary two-stack ideas of the Setun-70 onto binary mini- and microcomputers. Years earlier he had survived cancer deemed hopeless, operated on by the famous surgeon Petrovsky and nursed devotedly by his wife Natalia K

1993 Pentkovski emigrates to Intel

Vladimir Pentkovski, lead architect of the Elbrus El-90 32-bit microprocessor (completed 1987) and the El-76 language, joins Intel after the collapse killed his El-91S project. He goes on to lead the Pentium III architecture and contribute to SSE, though the legend that 'Pentium' was named after him is refuted by Intel.

2025-02-07 Centenary conference at MGU

On Brusentsov's 100th birthday, MGU holds a scientific conference in his honor. His idea echoes in the present: the 2024 BitNet b1.58 paper makes every weight of a large language model ternary (minus one, zero, plus one), a late vindication of the trit.

2025-04 Babayan, 91, announces the Elbrus-B

With his son Yevgeni, the veteran architect announces a new open architecture with its own language 'El-22' and operating system, claimed to beat Western architectures '30 to 200 times' at 5nm, pure developer prognosis, with no 5nm fabrication available in Russia.
