The orbital greenhouses that first tried to grow food among the stars

Background

From the first Salyut, small greenhouses tried to grow plants in orbit, the Oazis units, and later the Svet greenhouse aboard Mir. The goal was closed-loop life support: plants that recycle air and water and, one day, feed a crew on the way to Mars.

Progress was slow and humbling. Plants struggled to orient without gravity; early attempts to grow seed-to-seed failed. Only in the 1990s, aboard Mir, did the Svet greenhouse begin to yield genuine results, growing wheat and eventually completing a full life cycle.

These experiments are the quiet, real counterpart to the novel's dream of life flourishing in orbit, the first evidence that living systems, not just machines and people, might one day be at home in space.
