Timeline - Feoktistov in the record

7 entries from the Secret Dawn - Among the Stars archive, 5 of them events in Feoktistov's own life.

1926-02-07 Born in Voronezh

By his own account Konstantin Feoktistov survives being shot and left for dead by German troops as a teenage scout in the war, a brush with death that marks the future spacecraft designer.

1957 Designing Vostok

At Korolev's bureau, Feoktistov is a lead designer of the Vostok capsule that carries Gagarin, and then of Voskhod and Soyuz, the engineer who drew the ships. The year he moved onto the Vostok work is not established by the research behind this archive.

1964-10-12 Voskhod 1: three men, no spacesuits

Korolev strips a Vostok to cram in three: a pilot, an engineer (Feoktistov) and a physician (Yegorov), flying without pressure suits. The flight lasts 1 day 17 minutes 3 seconds.

1964-10-12 First physician in space

Rejected in 1962 for short sight and admitted only in May 1964, Yegorov flies on Voskhod 1 with Komarov and Feoktistov, making the first medical observations of humans in orbit by a doctor.

1964-10-12 Flies on Voskhod 1

A civilian engineer, Feoktistov talks his way onto Voskhod 1, becoming the first engineer and one of the first designers to fly in his own spacecraft.

1969-1980 Architect of the stations

Feoktistov becomes a principal designer of the Salyut stations, the orbital homes at the centre of this history. The years of that work, and any part in Mir, are not established by the research behind this archive.

2009-11-21 Death

Feoktistov dies in Moscow, remembered as the engineer who both designed and flew the early Soviet spacecraft.
