What the bag carries

What the bag carries

Before a research trip I lay the full kit on the duvet as if preparing a modest altar. The D5 with the 50mm already mounted. The cable release coiled beside it. The tripod that just fits the duffel on the diagonal if I accept a certain amount of argument from the zippers. Spare batteries, cards in their plastic case, two notebooks, a fistful of pencil stubs worn down to the paint, passport, and the phone as a backup camera I pretend I will not use.

Then comes the ritual I trust more than the packing list: I remove one third of what I have arranged. Weight is a tax on ambition. Every gram is invited to argue its case out loud while I stand there in stocking feet, unconvinced. The second notebook rarely survives. The extra battery sometimes does. The pencil stubs always stay, because they cost nothing and because a dull pencil still writes when a clever pen has died.

The umbrella, as always, loses. I have carried rain on my shoulders before and will again. What remains in the duffel is not elegant, only defensible: tools that earn their bulk by the time I reach the archive steps, slightly out of breath, and open the bag to find that I brought exactly enough and no parade.
