←→Sunday evening I called my mother. We did the weather first, as always. Wind in Bishkek, a thin rain where I am. Then the soft machinery began: am I eating, am I sleeping, am I living in a way she can summarize to a neighbor without a brochure.
Halfway through the tomatoes she said, almost lightly, that the son of someone from her old circle is back in the city for a stretch. Stable work. Good family. She has not sent a photograph. She would not. She only left the chair in the middle of the room and waited to see if I would sit.
I laughed. She sighed. The choreography held. I did not say yes. I did not give a speech. We hung up on a recipe and a promise to call next week.
Afterward the flat was quiet in the ordinary way, and the quiet had a new edge. Not anger. Not romance. More like a drawer I keep shut that someone else had opened from the other side. I made coffee in the cezve and sat with the phone face down and tried, for once, not to turn the feeling into a clever refusal.
I am not writing a catalogue. I am not auditioning anyone from this page. I only noticed, while the coffee climbed the sides of the pot, how rarely a man becomes visible to me at all.
Most of the ones who step forward want to be seen very quickly. They offer the job, the travel, the carefully timed compliment about my face before they have heard two full sentences. Some treat attention like a coin pushed across a counter. Some arrive already wounded by a version of me they built from a jacket sleeve or a paragraph. I can be polite for a long time. Politeness is not notice.
What I notice is smaller, and slower.
A man in a crowded doorway who moved aside for an older woman without checking whether anyone registered the courtesy. That stayed with me for a week, which is absurd, and also exact.
A man at a long table who caught a sharp remark of mine, did not collapse under it and did not answer with a harder one, only laughed once, short, and kept the thread. Competence of temper. Rarer than people admit.
Hands that know a task. A map folded the right way. A bag lifted without theatre. The particular calm of someone who has been lost in a city before and did not make the lostness my problem.
I am not moved by performance. I am moved by a person who can hold a room without draining it, and hold a silence without filling it for sport. Desire, when it comes, arrives late with me. It comes through the spine more than through the speech. Through how someone stands when plans break. Through whether their attention has weight, or only volume.
My mother means well. She always has. The man she has in mind may be fine in every civic sense. I have no quarrel with civic sense. I only know that I do not become interested because a life looks orderly from the outside. I become interested when a person is quietly equal to the hour he is in.
I will tell her next Sunday that I am working, which will be true, and that I am not free for introductions, which will also be true. She will dust the chair again. Affection lives in that stubbornness too.
As for the rest: I am not lonely in the way people like to diagnose from a distance. I am particular. Particular is not the same as closed. It only means the window is smaller than the street assumes, and most people walk past it without ever knowing it was open.
The cezve is empty. The phone is still face down. That is enough for one evening.
One short email when a new book is out or a price changes. Nothing else, and no forwarding to anyone.
