Six weeks of just this

Me on the Bishkek balcony with a tea glass at dusk.

For six weeks the chapter sat on the desk like a relative who had overstayed and stopped pretending to help with the dishes. I rewrote the opening until it knew every one of my tricks and refused them all. I moved scenes like furniture in a rented room, hoping the light would fall differently. It did not. By week three I was second-guessing the entire structure of the book, which is the special punishment reserved for people who cannot leave a stubborn middle alone.

The days took on a grim comedy. Cezve in the morning, despair by noon, a walk through cold streets that solved nothing except the need to be upright. I told Aigerim I was ‘in the thick of it,’ which is a phrase that means you have nothing useful to report. Dinara brought pastries and did not ask. The shortwave hissed through the evenings like a companion who understands that silence is also a form of talk. I filled notebooks with diagrams that looked decisive until morning.

What finally shifted was smaller than pride wanted. Not a revelation about theme or a heroic cut of forty pages. Just one transitional paragraph, written by hand on a Thursday when I had already declared the day a loss, that made two adjacent scenes stop glaring at each other. I typed it up half-suspecting it would curdle. It held. The chapter did not become good overnight, but it became movable again, which is the only definition of hope I trust during a bad stretch.

I am recording this without a lesson attached. Sometimes the work is six weeks of just this: showing up, failing in ordinary ways, and staying long enough for a single hinge to quietly start doing its job. The kettle boiled. The page stopped being an enemy. I went on.
