Holding the First Copy

Me holding the first printed copy of Ivanov's Ghost.←→

This morning, cold enough on the doorstep to see my breath, the courier left a small parcel on my doorstep in Bishkek, and I carried it inside like something that might vanish if I looked away. I made coffee in the battered cezve, the way I always do, and only then opened the box. There it was: the first printed copy of Ivanov's Ghost, my first novel. The cover felt cool under my fingers. I turned it over and over, half expecting the pages to be blank.

Years went into this. Not neat years, either. Mornings before the market opened, evenings after banya Saturdays with Aigerim and Dinara, notebooks filled and discarded. I chased the shape of a story set in a Moldovan hospital in 1998 until the work began to breathe on its own terms. Research meant long hours with what little I could gather about that time and place, and longer hours learning what to leave out so the silences could do their work.

I am greener at this than I care to admit. Launch day for a debut feels less like a polished event and more like standing in a doorway I was never certain would open. Friends texted congratulations. I answered them while still staring at the spine, as if the letters of my name might rearrange themselves into someone else's.

The shortwave radio crackles in the corner the way it always has. Outside, Osh bazaar will be loud tomorrow. Inside, I keep returning to that single copy on the table, proof that the long, uncertain work somehow became a book. I do not quite believe it yet. Perhaps belief will come later, after the coffee cools.
